FAQ

What does Iridium mean by "Extreme" Consulting?
Extreme Programming is a well-known development methodology that is used by many leading technology firms. It is based on the premise that projects should be planned so that applications can be put into production as quickly as possible; specifically as soon as the application can provide business value. The application is then iteratively improved, based on input from the end users. (The antithesis of extreme programming is "the big project", where a team of programmers work for 18 months with no input from the end users). Extreme Consulting is Iridium's variation on this theme: projects are defined in small blocks, applications are put into production quickly, and enhancements are implemented rapidly based on direct feedback from the end users.

Why are all of Iridium’s projects handled remotely?

Onsite consulting is expensive - both for the client and the consultant. The client has increased costs due to providing workspace for the consultant and being required to cover expenses for billable travel time, lodging, food, etc. In addition, many tasks associated with business intelligence projects (such as loading and processing a cube) can take hours to complete - a poor use of the onsite consultant’s time. Working remotely provides numerous advantages:

  • More efficient use of the consultant’s time
  • Consultant has access to their complete work environment and toolset
  • No need for client to reimburse for travel costs and (very expensive) billable travel time
  • Reduced costs and improved value for clients
  • We "turn off the clock" and work on other client projects whenever we launch a long-running process
  • Improved responsiveness - client requests can be handled immediately instead of during the next onsite visit

There are a lot of definitions for “Business Intelligence” floating around. Which does Iridium prefer?

We like this one: “Business Intelligence is the delivery of accurate, useful information to the appropriate decision makers within the necessary timeframe to support effective decision making.”

Or stated more succinctly: "The Right Information, in the Right Format, at the Right Time".

Because charitable acts and community service give meaning to our work. This is not the type of firm where each year at Christmas we will collect a few toys or give a couple hundred bucks to the local food bank; we are dedicated to making major contributions in terms of both effort and money. This firm is formed on the principles of quality, dedication, and integrity, and this is demonstrated by our commitment to giving back to the global and local communities. It is our sincere hope that as the firm grows we will be able to take our charitable contributions to an even greater level.
